The Canadian Trans-Pacific Free Trade Heist

I moved from the UK to Canada in 2008 because it was a beautiful country with amazing vistas and to support it’s peoples love of the great outdoors.  As time progresses and the more I read and understand about the Harper government, the more I begin to see corruption and a seedy underbelly to this country.  Greed, money and a political interest in the ‘value’ of nature, is turning my love of Canada against Canadian leaders.
Are you Canadian, do you love this country, do you love your leaders, what makes you proud to be Canadian these days?!

The free trade agreement is all about exploiting Canada’s natural resources & agricultural commodities and importing products produced in jurisdictions that have much lower wages in many cases.  After WWII, the Canadian manufacturing sector made up 29% of our economy, but now it only makes up 13% (a 55% decline).  This trend will only continue to get worse based on the decisions the Harper government is making.  Our government should be supporting and promoting local businesses rather than outsourcing local economic potential.  In addition, now that the 2012 Omnibus budget has been passed, environmental assessment on natural resource projects have suffered a serious blow.  Projects will be fast tracked.   The goal of the Harper government is to exploit Canada’s resources as quickly as possible in an effort to sell the raw material to developing nations so that we can purchase the finished products using bank credit.  You can easily see where this is going.

Climate Action Day – May 5th 2012

As you all know I am very passionate about protecting our environment and have been blogging about various ways in which we can reduce our footprint. Infact I’m not sure I like the term footprint, as it seems a little disparaging. I would maybe use the term devastation. Continue reading

Day 123 (positive project) Are you Crazy Enough?

20120216-070943.jpg

Whilst in a tea house I noticed that the Steve Jobs Biography was sat on the book shelf. I had a spare ten minutes, so read the introduction. I turned to the quote above. I am very familiar with this and find it is very inspirational.

Don’t forget, people might think you’re slightly crazy by the things you do to change the world, but that’s ok, because you will. Stay strong, stay crazy!

Awesome Christmas Tree Idea

If you really feel that you must buy a Christmas tree this season and a few home made ornaments wrapped over a branch in the garden just won’t cut it for you, then I have the best environmental solution!!

Live Christmas tree rental!

Yes, awesome – they deliver the tree, in a pot, to your door and then pick it up when you’re done.  This is so awesome and is the best solution for the environment, apart from not having a tree of course, but nevertheless, go check out the Evergrow Live Christmas Tree Rental Site.  They are based in Burnaby, Vancouver, BC and deserve a pat on the back for their idea.

Good work boys. You can also find ‘em on Facebook.

Canada Fails Humanity but Serves Corporate Consumer Greed

The people of Canada are an extremely environmentally conscious group of people and here, more than anywhere, I have witnessed the rise of great people doing great things to promote environmental awareness. The country has an amazingly diverse and beautiful landscape which lends itself perfectly to a great deal of outdoor pursuits. For this reason the people that live here understand the importance of looking after the environment and have such a deep appreciation for it. It is because of this that I am completely shocked at the recent decision by Peter Kent, someone who for some unjust reason, has earned the position of Environment Minister!! You have to be kidding. An Environment Minister that pulls out of the Kyoto Treaty??!

Despite Canada’s love of the environment, there is a dark side to it, Oil & Wood export. These items seem to contribute a huge amount to the economy and the Governments’ need for greed is holding it back in regards to progress in relation to all things green.

If Canada just said, “no, we will not export Oil”, then maybe some scientist group would have to come up with alternative ways to create energy. In fact I am pretty sure people already have. I feel that there is too much greed and too much money to be made from Oil and the current system, that the large corporations that control the industry are lobbying the governments so hard that they have been bought over.
If Stephen Harper & Peter Kent were true Canadians, I feel they would honor the land and it’s native people, take pride in the beauty that the country has to offer and not bow down to the American demands and pressure.
Just because our government doesn’t care doesn’t mean we shouldn’t. We need to do everything within our power to focus on a new way forward.

Day 52 (positive project) Words for the White House

Over the last year or so, I have become more involved in searching; searching out news.  With the advent of Twitter, Facebook and RSS feeds we all have much more access to news we want to find and even some we don’t.  This influx of information can be hard to control sometimes, but the benefits of it is that we all get to find out things that we may not normally find by listening to main stream media.

A few years back I was happy to move away from a place where daily news was pushed on you and to limit my exposure to the bad news at the time I thought this was great and still do feel it is a great thing to not surround yourself with bad news.  However, I have now taken the stance that, escaping the news completely, although very calming, breeds ignorance and causes us to be a byproduct of society.  I have realized that if I can take the negative news and do something positive with it, then I am giving back to society and no longer become a byproduct, but an active participant in societies creation.  And what else are we all here for, if not to contribute to society?

Being in a position where I am unable to vote, may have increased my desires for actively involving myself in a means to change, but either way, I am confident that any change, no matter how small, will make a difference.  It’s like an ingredient in a tasty dish, that pinch of salt might just make all the difference!

I recently sent the following words directly to the Keystone Pipeline Project, the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the White House (there is a little submission page on the White House Site)

I hope this post inspires you to stand up for what you believe in.

My Letter

Dear Keystone Project and Mr Harper, ( I have also submitted this online to the White House)

I am sure I am not the first to write to you about this shameful project.

I am aware that Obama has postponed a decision on this, but I am also aware of the pipeline being snuck in via the backdoor using some employment bill.

I wanted to express my fears with regards to this Earth shattering possibility of ruining the beautiful world we live in, by exploiting land and people for filthy oil.  I understand the ‘urgency’ to use this dirty oil to raise money and to feed the worlds dependance on oil, but surely we can use this as a turning point in history, so just say NO.  Let’s not use the oil, lets not extract anything from the tar sands and lets not sell it to Asia either.  Let’s just leave it where it is and move to a renewable free energy.  It is possible to cleanly and freely power all homes and businesses with out risk to animal or human life.  It will not line the pockets of big corporations or increase our return on investments for our future pensions or generations, but surely the opportunity of free energy will reduce the dependancy on money and the dependancy on the government, reducing the need for pensions and the need for war.  We are all currently fighting for Oil, if we don’t need it anymore, then we would reduce costs for war also.  If everybody has ‘the power’ then no one needs to fight for the power! Maybe this is not the ultimate goal of our world leaders but the people have the right to choose their future, not big banks, or corporations.

In a world with free power and healthy soil, we won’t need as much money.  In a world with no natural resources left, we will have nothing to spend money on and therefore will be useless anyway.  In the direction this Pipeline takes us, we will arrive at a power hungry desolate world, let’s turn this around into a clean and responsible planet.  Instead of spending your money on building a pipeline let’s re-invent the world.  Lets put money into clean energy.  Do something for other instead of for yourself.  Let’s re-invent the combustion engine, lets redesign transport, lets re-design buildings, lets redesign packaging, lets revert back to arable farming.  No more oil, please!

A concerned Human Being.

Thank you for taking the time to read my views.

Day 47 (positive project) Releasing Judgment

A very interesting perspective has recently appeared for me.  It is very insightful and yet ironically difficult to approach.  It is difficult to approach because it challenges the beliefs that many people conform to, and the systems by which they are guided and use to guide others.  The whole irony aspect kicks in, because the actual subject I’m dealing with, is the ability to speak out, knowing that it goes against the norm and therefore creating a fear of judgement by others.

So here goes….

Society creates markers by which we judge things, good or bad, right or wrong, insane or genius, normal or crazy.  Many people are scared to speak out about what they believe incase their friend or relative judges them, or ridicules them.  How are we to know, or who are we to judge, what is right or wrong?  People all have their own markers they use to judge themselves, most of which have become such, by conditioning, or because of exposure to certain cultures and belief systems, along with individual experiences.  So is it possible then, that culture itself could be controlled? An imposed culture, a way to act that carries down through society?  A way to think and conduct oneself, that is unknowingly policed by your very friends and family?  I feel that it is and we must not allow this to happen.

I read an article in The Guardian the other day, it mentioned that David Cameron used the word, ‘leftwing’, to insult somebody, saying they were, “Irresponsible, leftwing and weak.”  This is just one example of the societal control I refer to.  The Prime Minister of England is trying to express that leftwing is wrong, attempting to put this person down for a set of beliefs that they hold. If people became fearful of speaking out about what they believe, concerned as to the reaction from those around them, then we fall into a controlled society or culture.

The more we challenge our belief systems, by stepping out of fear, then the better chance we have of learning and creating.  We need to connect to a truth within us and be comfortable expressing that understanding.  It becomes dangerous when we blindly accept ‘the norm’.

Some random thoughts occurred to me recently and I decided to write one thought down to explore:-

When you judge, details restrain a desire to express, at the risk of ones self being judged.  When left un-judged, expression expresses; for the un-judging, are free from judgement.

My interpretation of this is that we need to release our judgement of others and ourselves in order to allow freedom of expression and increased creativity.  How does this link to challenging belief systems? Well, the very concept or image you judge yourself against, has been self-imposed by your external conditioning and those belief systems and when you conform to these, you are constricting your own self.  Only once you come into alignment with who you truly are inside; can you release judgement and act from an inner knowing rather than a place of pre-concievd notions and beliefs.

Challenge the norm, challenge yourself and expand who you are.

(so for those that missed the positive change here – I am dropping judgement of myself and others, based on pre-conditioned, externally layered, cultural beliefs – I never said any of these positive changes would be easy!!)

Day 41 (positive project) Asking – Giving

On day 17 of the positive project, my positive action for that day was to join the Movember craze to raise money for mens health awareness and prostate cancer.  It has been much fun and so far I have raised $120.

With only 5 days left, I am left with the question, could I have done better and how could I have done better?

Some people raise a great deal of money for the cause, my friend last year raised $645, which is amazing and makes my $120 look terrible, but the thing is $120 is $120.  That’s $120 of other peoples money.  People that have encouraged me and given something to me in return for the time & effort one puts in to raising the money.  So to those people I thank you.

This brings me to the question of, “What about those people that didn’t give?”  When fund raising; it can be so hard to ask people for money, but in this day and age when so many people are raising money, it can also be hard to give.  I know when I am on the receiving end of the question, “Can you donate to me for this?” I do seem to weigh up the reasons for and against donating and assess whether the cause is something I feel passionate about or not and choose to donate based on that.  Looking at it from this perspective makes me less concerned about those not donating and even more grateful for those that do.  The buzz one gets when your efforts are recognized adds to the collective goodness.

In the interests of increasing this positive energy, I will now donate money to those that ask.  It can be hard to part with your money for something you have never given a thought to before, but it’s much harder raising money.  Taking this into consideration, supporting someone for doing something positive, is a step in the right direction, even if it is just $1.  It is not necessarily the ’cause’ that you are supporting, it’s the person that is raising the money.  They have chosen to raise money for something they believe in, when donating money, you are giving it to them, you are supporting them and this generosity supports and encourages their actions.

So on this International Day of Buying Nothing, lets raise my water filled glass (see related post), to donating.

Cheers.

Keystone XL pipeline – Project Delayed for more research

In an amazing turn of events, the XL pipeline has been delayed. This is great news for all environmentalists. It is buying humanity more time to convince the powers that be that the pipeline is the worst environmental decision currently in the ‘pipeline’, if you pardon my pun.

In a statement, Obama said he supported the decision. “Because this permit decision could affect the health and safety of the American people as well as the environment, and because a number of concerns have been raised through a public process, we should take the time to ensure that all questions are properly addressed and all the potential impacts are properly understood,”

Let's not allow this to happen

This battle is not over yet though, it merely buys us more time to educate more people about this terrible plan of building this pipeline. We need to make a move to renewable energy much quicker than we have been. We all have access to wind & sun and we all have the ability to provide ourselves with our own power supplies without having to rely on energy being transported, shipped, piped from anywhere else to the detriment of health and safety of others; just so someone can make money. Lets base our future decisions on need not greed.

For those blissfuly unaware of this proposal you can check out some info on the Earthworks site along with a quick google search and you will be able to find many action groups on this if you would like to have your say and stand up to be heard.

The US Government also have some interesting information on their site, especially the environmental impact statement.  Lots of reading, some of which explains the “low risk” of seismic hazards, landslides & subsidence.  The report seems to lean in a very favourable way towards to the project, brushing over the real threats that face us should the pipeline go ahead.

The Tar Sands Action Group also had something to say about todays news.

Day 19 (positive project) Beef

Today I decided to not eat Beef for the duration of this project.

I have previously watched documentaries that have explained that Beef is hugely unsustainable (food Inc. to name just one) and in more recent news, this has been reconfirmed.  In my last video post, courtesy of Jeremy Rifkin, he includes the fact that beef consumption is the 2nd largest cause of climate change.  This simply reiterates the fact and along with many other articles/documentaries on the matter (just google “beef climate change“) it has caused me to say NO to beef for the rest of this project.

some info for you.
