The Canadian Trans-Pacific Free Trade Heist

I moved from the UK to Canada in 2008 because it was a beautiful country with amazing vistas and to support it’s peoples love of the great outdoors.  As time progresses and the more I read and understand about the Harper government, the more I begin to see corruption and a seedy underbelly to this country.  Greed, money and a political interest in the ‘value’ of nature, is turning my love of Canada against Canadian leaders.
Are you Canadian, do you love this country, do you love your leaders, what makes you proud to be Canadian these days?!

The free trade agreement is all about exploiting Canada’s natural resources & agricultural commodities and importing products produced in jurisdictions that have much lower wages in many cases.  After WWII, the Canadian manufacturing sector made up 29% of our economy, but now it only makes up 13% (a 55% decline).  This trend will only continue to get worse based on the decisions the Harper government is making.  Our government should be supporting and promoting local businesses rather than outsourcing local economic potential.  In addition, now that the 2012 Omnibus budget has been passed, environmental assessment on natural resource projects have suffered a serious blow.  Projects will be fast tracked.   The goal of the Harper government is to exploit Canada’s resources as quickly as possible in an effort to sell the raw material to developing nations so that we can purchase the finished products using bank credit.  You can easily see where this is going.

Day 54 (positive project) Worry Turns to Trust

The entire premise of this blog hinges on emotion.  The very act of being positive relates to feelings of positivity and is therefore inseparable from emotion.  This awareness of ones ‘state of being’ has brought me closer to my emotions and places them somewhat in the spotlight, forcing me to take a look at them.

Now the topic of emotions is HUGE and many books have been written and will be written on this matter.  But, my current interpretation on emotions (and I reserve the right to change my opinions) is that emotions are indicators, signposts, a way to measure how you are doing and if you are on the right path.  Being able to access these emotions, or at least recognizing them when they appear is very beneficial to setting the path you desire.

Bringing positivity to the forefront during this project, obviously brings with it the negativity as you need to have both polarities for the other to exist.  Positivity has no context without negativity.  So when one attempt to remain positive, you tend to look at negative in order to choose the path.  This brought me to a fork in the road, one path is doubt, the other is trust….

We harbour doubts and mistrusts to protect ourselves. We create suffering when there is no need. The bad stuff happens in ones head, but that is merely worry. For one need not protect himself, when one is surrounded by positivity and honesty. Have faith that humanity will provide only good and if ‘badness’ does occur then be it dealt with then, as that is enough to contend with. Extra undue worry, simply adds.  It is merely mind clutter that wasteth time and emotion.  TRUST.

Day 52 (positive project) Words for the White House

Over the last year or so, I have become more involved in searching; searching out news.  With the advent of Twitter, Facebook and RSS feeds we all have much more access to news we want to find and even some we don’t.  This influx of information can be hard to control sometimes, but the benefits of it is that we all get to find out things that we may not normally find by listening to main stream media.

A few years back I was happy to move away from a place where daily news was pushed on you and to limit my exposure to the bad news at the time I thought this was great and still do feel it is a great thing to not surround yourself with bad news.  However, I have now taken the stance that, escaping the news completely, although very calming, breeds ignorance and causes us to be a byproduct of society.  I have realized that if I can take the negative news and do something positive with it, then I am giving back to society and no longer become a byproduct, but an active participant in societies creation.  And what else are we all here for, if not to contribute to society?

Being in a position where I am unable to vote, may have increased my desires for actively involving myself in a means to change, but either way, I am confident that any change, no matter how small, will make a difference.  It’s like an ingredient in a tasty dish, that pinch of salt might just make all the difference!

I recently sent the following words directly to the Keystone Pipeline Project, the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the White House (there is a little submission page on the White House Site)

I hope this post inspires you to stand up for what you believe in.

My Letter

Dear Keystone Project and Mr Harper, ( I have also submitted this online to the White House)

I am sure I am not the first to write to you about this shameful project.

I am aware that Obama has postponed a decision on this, but I am also aware of the pipeline being snuck in via the backdoor using some employment bill.

I wanted to express my fears with regards to this Earth shattering possibility of ruining the beautiful world we live in, by exploiting land and people for filthy oil.  I understand the ‘urgency’ to use this dirty oil to raise money and to feed the worlds dependance on oil, but surely we can use this as a turning point in history, so just say NO.  Let’s not use the oil, lets not extract anything from the tar sands and lets not sell it to Asia either.  Let’s just leave it where it is and move to a renewable free energy.  It is possible to cleanly and freely power all homes and businesses with out risk to animal or human life.  It will not line the pockets of big corporations or increase our return on investments for our future pensions or generations, but surely the opportunity of free energy will reduce the dependancy on money and the dependancy on the government, reducing the need for pensions and the need for war.  We are all currently fighting for Oil, if we don’t need it anymore, then we would reduce costs for war also.  If everybody has ‘the power’ then no one needs to fight for the power! Maybe this is not the ultimate goal of our world leaders but the people have the right to choose their future, not big banks, or corporations.

In a world with free power and healthy soil, we won’t need as much money.  In a world with no natural resources left, we will have nothing to spend money on and therefore will be useless anyway.  In the direction this Pipeline takes us, we will arrive at a power hungry desolate world, let’s turn this around into a clean and responsible planet.  Instead of spending your money on building a pipeline let’s re-invent the world.  Lets put money into clean energy.  Do something for other instead of for yourself.  Let’s re-invent the combustion engine, lets redesign transport, lets re-design buildings, lets redesign packaging, lets revert back to arable farming.  No more oil, please!

A concerned Human Being.

Thank you for taking the time to read my views.

People are standing up all over the world for what is right. The approval of this pipeline, may increase the ‘economy’ and make more jobs, but is that really a good thing? I feel we need to slow the rate of destruction of our planet. More jobs in the right sector would be the best solution. Oil seems to make governments money and large corporation money, but it is ultimately harming the bigger picture. We need to reduce our dependence on oil if we are going to sustain the human race.

Day 20 (positive project) Complaining

I am currently working a job that involves some rather mundane physical labour.  During this work, I am left alone with my thoughts, whilst (as it currently stands) I scrub algae from the bottom of a boat. This has both benefits and problems. One benefit, is that I am able to filter through some thoughts and file things, organize things in my head and generally do a bit of housekeeping of the mind.  During this process I came up with todays positive change.  But first, the problems with the job, just to set a bit of background.

"This is FUN!"

I ache, I get bored, I get cold, I injure myself, I spill chemicals over me, I get wet, I feel pain! So, this has lead me to complain a little bit, not only to other people but to myself, in my head, for much of the day.  It’s been getting to me and I am fed up of it (the complaining that is).  So, here enters my positive change.  I currently have one week left of this particular job and it is my plan to not complain for the rest of my time in the job.  Being British however, this could be a challenge.  I started today whilst under the boat, each time a sigh of questioning frustration and exhaustion left my lungs, I would catch myself and smile.  I even laughed a few times, laughing at how easy I become frustrated.  Music helped me too, although when earbuds fall out whilst spraying bleach, suited up in rubber gloves, goggles and a face mask, in a crawl space the size of a glove-box, the task of re-fitting the audible light relief was cringeworthy.  But no, no complaints.  People have it way worse, I need to be grateful.

So hence the idea of no complaints was born.  I need to give myself some ground rules here as I need to be clear how I can avoid complaining.  Complaining is part of my culture, it’s also factored in to my humour delivery.

Complain – express dissatisfaction or annoyance about a state of affairs or an event

Ok, so all I have to is not express dissatisfaction – If I am dissatisfied with something, how can I make the dissatisfaction known without complaining? Surely I am not to just put up with a situation I don’t like?  Maybe that’s exactly what I do.

I am going to stop complaining for the next week.  I’ll let you know how it goes.

Secrets of Clayoquot Sound

Humpback Whale - taken during my recent Whale watch trip

I have recently moved to Tofino BC, Canada; a beautiful place, rich in nature, steeped in wildlife, blessed by amazing sunsets, outlined by yellow beaches, filled with lush green forests. I am dazzled by its freshness and appreciate my 15 minute walk to work in the morning. One view I am fortunate to see each day is that of Catface Mountain. The unfortunate information I learnt regarding this; is that a Vancouver Based Company ‘Imperial Metals‘ are exploring the potential for a copper mine on Catface Mountain. If this went ahead they would rip the top 3rd from the Mountain, not only changing the physical landscape, but completely ruining local wildlife patterns with the potential to contaminate the surrounding waters, with effects running much further than one might at first imagine. The process of extracting this copper might result in sulphuric acid being created as run off into the surrounding waters.

The below excerpt is taken from a document issued by the Environmental Protection Agency, the full version of which can be found here – > Part 1Part 2

Acid Drainage

Sulfide copper ores, such as chalcopyrite and bornite, typically contain sulfides of copper, lead, antimony, arsenic, and silver. During the mining of ore, the effects of the weathering may be increased due to the exposure of additional surface area and an increased oxidation rate. When the mineralized material is exposed to water, the oxidization of the sulfide minerals may lead to the formation of sulfuric acid (Doyle and Mirza 1990).

The generation of acids may then act to increase the dissolution, mobilization, and transportation of heavy and toxic metals noted above. Except for iron, all of these are toxic to humans and to aquatic life and are known to accumulate in the environment and concentrate in the food chain (Wills 1981).

One group here is taking action, Friends of Clayoquot Sound. They have set up a campaign to highlight the dangers of this proposed mine and offer people the chance to have their say. Being so local to this adds a lot more weight to it than maybe most of you reading this will feel. Despite this, I apply to your deeper connection with nature and your strength to be heard, by asking you to help keep Catface as it is.

There is a template email that I ask you to forward on that you will find on the Friends of Clayoquot website.

Logging

Help keep this in pristine condition

Another issue facing the area is that of deforestation. A company in charge of the logging rights, Iiasaak, claim to be an ecologically sensitive forest management company. In 1999 they signed an agreement to leave all ‘intact’ forests well alone, keeping them in their pristine condition. Iisaak is now breaking this agreement! Stop them here.

I have pieced together a fun video to highlight the devastation of forests around the world and the ease at which people chose to destroy them and how ugly they can look during the process of clear-cutting. Having recently moved to Tofino, I decided to make this relevant to the area I live and chose to support the Friends of Clayoquot Sound, but this video is in support of all those standing up for healthy forests everywhere around the world.

Please help – Spread awareness

I hope that all of you reading this can help in someway and that my time and effort placed into this article has been worth it. Even if it gets you talking to others about the terrible processes involved in obtaining precious metals for our own consumption, I feel that will be an achievement.

Further reading I recommend for those interested in searching for positive answers to our seemingly dangerous route to the complete depletion of resources would be a book called Cradle to Cradle by William McDonough & Michael Braungart.

Take Urgent Action against the Tar Sands

Does this look like a world you want to live in?

Tomorrow, June 30th is the last day that you can take action through the WWF in an attempt to direct the future of the EU’s fuel choices.  Will you let them chose the dirtiest fuel from the Canadian Tar sands or, would you prefer to recommend they choose a cleaner future?

Head on over to WWF site and throw in your email address to express your concerns.  We don’t have long, let’s get it done.

Post Riot Positive Graffiti

Messages of support after the clean up

After the Stanley Cup Riot in Vancouver, thousands of people flocked to help clean up the streets, armed with brushes and bin bags, they cleaned the streets of glass, dirt and general mess.  Wooden boards were placed in all the broken windows.  This enticed in thousands of people to scrawl their message of support for the citizens of Vancouver and the Vancouver Hockey team, along with messages to those rioters, informing them of their ridiculous behaviour.  The wall also showcases the good nature of Vancouver citizens in an attempt to redeem their image after images of riots were sent around the globe.  This City is one that stands together united for the greater good and we proved it.  Not only did we fill these boards with amazing messages, but now the museum has agreed to store the message boards once the windows are replaced.

Thank you to everyone who made a move toward the positive.

Update 11.26am (pdt) - The link below will take you to an amazing photo of the ENTIRE graffiti wall, it is completely zoomable and readable – you could spend hours on it!  Enjoy!
